How We Teach

Our teachers plan from clear curriculum expectations and adapt lessons so that every student is challenged and supported. Learning is active: students investigate, discuss, make, present and reflect. Project-Based Learning and Global Skills Projects connect subjects to real questions. Learning technology is used purposefully, and students are taught to use digital tools and AI ethically and well — one of the six MAKSON Graduate attributes. Class sizes average 16 students (maximum 20) in Early Years, and average 16 students (maximum 22) in Primary and Secondary.

Nursery & Early Years

Where the love of learning begins. Our Nursery and Early Years Programme combines the Oxford International Early Years Curriculum with Montessori-inspired, play-based learning and daily language development. English is taught by international teachers, while Khmer and Chinese are woven into the school day by specialist teachers. Children learn through exploration, purposeful play, songs, stories, movement and practical experiences that build confidence and independence.

Secondary

Internationally recognised qualifications and the skills to use them. Secondary continues MAKSON's trilingual pathway. Lower Secondary follows the Oxford International Curriculum alongside Cambodia's national curriculum and Chinese. Upper Secondary prepares students for OxfordAQA IGCSE examinations, with MAKSON preparing and examining students as an approved OxfordAQA centre. Our first IGCSE cohort sits examinations in the 2026–2027 academic year, followed by AS Level in Grade 11 and A Level in Grade 12 — meaning our first A Level cohort is expected in the 2028–2029 academic year. Throughout Upper Secondary, students also continue the Cambodian national curriculum, including the Grade 12 national examination.

Languages

Language is at the heart of a MAKSON education. English is the main language of learning and is taught by international teachers. Khmer follows the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport framework and keeps every student connected to Cambodian language, literature and identity. Chinese (Mandarin) is taught daily by specialist teachers as a third language. All three continue from Nursery to Grade 12.

Chinese is currently taught within the Cambodian national curriculum rather than as an OxfordAQA IGCSE subject. OxfordAQA introduced an International GCSE in Chinese in 2026, but only as a First Language qualification for native/heritage speakers; it does not yet offer a Foreign Language Chinese IGCSE suited to students learning Chinese as an additional subject, which is how Chinese is taught at MAKSON. MAKSON plans to introduce OxfordAQA IGCSE Chinese as a foreign language once that qualification becomes available.

Support for Every Language Learner

All students are assessed using the Oxford placement test, benchmarked against CEFR levels. Where a student does not yet meet our English proficiency requirements, they are supported through our Language Support Programme, alongside the optional after-school Language Remedial Programme. Students new to Khmer or Chinese are supported in the same way. Progress in all three languages is reported to parents each term.

Understanding every learner's progress — and sharing it clearly.

Assessment & Reporting to Parents

Assessment

Assessment is an ongoing part of teaching and learning. Teachers use a range of formative and summative approaches to understand what students know, identify where support or greater challenge may be needed, and plan appropriate next steps. Student progress is reviewed against curriculum expectations. Assessment information supports teaching decisions, targeted intervention and clear communication with students and parents.

Reporting to Parents

Parents should never be surprised by a report. MAKSON shares progress regularly and in plain language — in English for International Programme subjects, and in Khmer for national programme subjects.
