MAKSON International Academy combines global educational standards with strong Cambodian identity, character and close partnership with families.
Every school starts with a promise to a handful of families.
First licensed by Cambodia's Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport in 2020, MAKSON International Academy opened its doors on 17 February 2021, at a single campus in Phnom Penh Thmei, with 70 students and a small team of 30 staff. From the first day, our goal has been to give every learner strong foundational skills and good character, and to develop high achievers who are well-equipped global citizens — while making sure every student understands, and is proud of, Cambodia's culture, civilisation and identity.
That goal has shaped our growth. What began as one campus is now four: Phnom Penh Thmei in 2021, 598 Campus in 2023, OCIC Campus in 2025 and Norea Campus in 2026. Student numbers have grown from 70 to more than 1,000, and our team from 30 to more than 500 educators and staff, across a single, consistent MAKSON standard of education and care.
Along the way, MAKSON has reached milestones that matter to families: two international awards at the 2023 World School Summit — Best Innovative School and Best School in Experiential Learning; authorisation in 2024 to teach the Oxford International Curriculum, among the first schools in Cambodia to do so; and, in 2026, approval as an OxfordAQA examination centre. In 2027, our first cohort of students will sit their IGCSE examinations — the next milestone in a story that is still being written.
"I didn't want to build a school where families had to choose between an excellent international education and a proud Cambodian one. MAKSON exists to prove they don't have to choose — that a child can be a confident global citizen and deeply rooted in who they are, at the same time."
We are still the school we were on our first day: one that measures success not only in results, but in the kind of people our students become.

To inspire every learner to think with curiosity, live with strong character and act with purpose — ready to thrive, lead and make a positive difference in a changing world.
MAKSON International Academy provides a trilingual education in English, Khmer and Chinese that unites the Oxford International Curriculum with Cambodia's national curriculum. Through excellent teaching, disciplined and caring learning environments, and close partnership with parents, we ensure that every student builds strong foundations, sound character and the skills to succeed in Cambodia and the world.
We set high expectations and aim to exceed them.
We take ownership of our learning, our actions and our community.
We keep going when things are hard, and we learn from mistakes.
We are truthful, fair and act with integrity.
We value every person, every culture and every point of view.
We achieve more together than we can alone.
Our vision becomes visible in the qualities we deliberately develop in every learner. These six attributes are MAKSON's schoolwide learner outcomes: they guide what we teach, how we teach and how we report progress.
The MAKSON Graduate profile was developed by school leadership in 2024, expanding on the school's vision. It is reviewed every two years as part of our Continuous School Improvement cycle, with each review shaped by feedback gathered from teachers, parents and students. Teachers plan against the attributes, students reflect on them, and progress towards them is shared with families through reports and conferences.
Global educational standards, strong Cambodian identity, and close partnership with families.
Clear governance. Experienced leadership. Shared accountability.

MAKSON's Board of Governors provides strategic oversight and accountability, safeguards the school's mission and values, approves key policies and long-term priorities, and monitors the quality and sustainability of the school. Day-to-day educational and operational leadership is delegated to the Executive Leadership Team.
The Board meets at least twice a year, and works through three standing committees — Education & Quality, Finance & Risk, and Safeguarding — each chaired by an independent member and reporting recommendations back to the full Board between meetings. It reviews the school's improvement priorities, approves the annual budget and fee schedule, and evaluates the performance of the school and of its own work each year. Three of its seven members are independent of the school's management.
The Chairman, Mr Mony Ung, also serves as Managing Director; in practice his involvement in day-to-day school management is limited to budget oversight, with academic and operational leadership delegated to the Executive Leadership Team. When the Board reviews the Managing Director's own performance, an independent member leads that discussion and Mr Ung recuses himself.

This page brings together how MAKSON is governed, how it checks its own quality, which external bodies recognise it and how it keeps improving.
At MAKSON, improvement is an ongoing process. We regularly review student learning, teaching practice, curriculum, student wellbeing, parent and student feedback, and school operations to understand what is working well and where we can do better.
Our Continuous School Improvement Plan turns these findings into clear priorities and measurable actions. School leaders, teachers, students and families contribute to the improvement process, helping us strengthen the quality of education and care across MAKSON.
Birthday and milestone recognition, Star Student walls each term, and regular family celebrations at every campus.
A new school-wide Learning Management System and practical classroom AI, giving teachers better support and parents clearer visibility into progress.
Completing our internal self-study and readiness review, and setting a clear timeline towards international accreditation.
Stronger onboarding for every new hire and clearer mentoring and development pathways across all four campuses.
We ask families, students and staff what they think, and we act on what we hear. Each year MAKSON runs a parent survey in Term 3, gathers student voice through our Student Council, and — starting this year — a staff survey. Results are reviewed by the Executive Leadership Team and the Board and feed directly into the improvement priorities above. Headline results are shared with the community each year.
